Over the past several days, I have begun to get situated in the electronic music studio for the purposes of recording and editing. Formerly, I had been having some problems working with Reaper on my personal computer, but things are going much more smoothly now. I’m also beginning to derive some enjoyment from the process of creating electronic music, having just completed my first “real” piece of electronic music, about 30 seconds in length. The project was an opportunity to try out a couple of the plug-ins we had learned about in class. It was both challenging and thought provoking to construct a musically interesting piece using only one recording–the sound of Ani blowing through an organ reed.

As I had some technical problems presenting my work to the class last week, I look forward to being able to show my work to the class this week and to receiving their feedback. I also look forward to listening to another recording this week–Chris Watson’s El Tren Fantasma and to learning more about the Westerkamp, the artist behind one of the works I discussed last week. On all these matters, I plan to post a detailed update by this coming Thursday.

  1. Ben, I’m glad that you are becoming more and more comfortable with the electronic music environment. One thing I would recommend doing is looking up YouTube tutorials for basic things and just getting familiar with your DAW. I did that when I started off and it helped me a lot just messing around with the software.

  2. I agree with Ani–youtube is your friend. But clearly, you’ve got a good start and you’ve figured out quite a bit on your own, which is great.
